Had a great time in Edmonton this weekend.
Lots of fun stuff happened this weekend...K's been hankering to have a cat around the house for the last couple of months. The last time I was up there, we took a look at the SPCA, didn't really find anything that we liked, and decided to leave it for the time being. We went again on Friday, and again... didn't find anything we liked (except for one really cute tortoise-shell kitten, which wasn't declawed or spayed and a very nice looking grey cat with kennel cough).PetSmart (Shop smart... shop S-Mart!) also does adoptions for the SPCA, so we decided to head out to the one in Edmonton West to see what they had available. After the dismal trip to the SPCA, we didn't expect much... but we were nicely surprised. This PetSmart must have been the promised-land of great cats. We moved down the line, until I spotted one (Buttons - ech) who met all of Kirsten's wishlist entries. She was declawed, spayed, female, and microchiped - supercat! It was still a matter of personality, however. We couldn't get supercat if all it wanted to do was sit in a corner, hiss at us, or attempt to scratch our eyes out.Incredibly, the cat was amazingly friendly. She wandered over to the front of the cage, started purring and rubbing, etc. We thought it was all a part of the 'adopt me' act until the cat rolled over and let us scratch its belly. That's right: belly - the forbidden scratching-place of felinedom. It turns out the cat loves being groomed. This was the clincher for K... we started the adoption process then and there.A day later, Zelda (we couldn't, in all honesty, stand the name Buttons) was in her new home, wandering around and sitting about the place. She adjusted to her new home VERY quickly (K mentioned that even her other supercat, Mystik, took a few days to come out of hiding). Funnily enough, Zelda is very similar to Mystik (no, we didn't plan it that way). She's very affectionate, and mews quite a bit (though to say 'mew' is a misnomer... we think her previous owner may have devoiced the cat, as all she does is this breathy, quiet mew-like noise). She's much more laid back than Mystik, however, as can be seen by the scratching of the belly... All in all, a great cat for K to have around the house, which should make her a little less lonely when I'm not there.Lots of non-cat related fun on the weekend as well... we went to see Planet of the Apes on Saturday. I gotta say, I was impressed - Good job, Mr. Burton. Not totally true to the original movie, as K tells me (he stays on the planet in the 1968 version, and the apes are 'more scientific'), but still an excellent flick... Other than that, we really didn't get out all that much this weekend... spent many hours with the new cat, in hopes of bonding. ;)
