I've had a few of you ask over the past few days, so here's an update.
I was fired on Friday, "without just cause". My manager had hired my replacement at the beginning of January, one working week after we'd had an initial talk, where he told me that people found me "difficult to work with" (but refused to tell me who).
An HR investigation turned up very little of significance, and in fact showed there were many people within the organization that found me a pleasure to work with. Emails from the manager to myself, which he claimed were warnings about my performance, were read by HR, and didn't show warnings; in fact they showed praise for my skills and work. His claims of conversations about how I should improve were abject lies - but since there was no documentation of them, it became a "he said / he said" situation.
That being said, however, the manager had still hired my replacement, and since there was no other place in the company for me to go, the only place they could put me was on the unemployment line. To make the situation even more odd, I'm coming out of the company with two reference letters (one from the first manager I worked under, the other from the head of Investor Relations), a professional reference, and a personal reference from one of the HR people.
So, here I am... I didn't actually do anything to deserve termination, but I was terminated nonetheless. If you know anyone who needs a web developer in the Edmonton area, please let me know.
